The old freejazz.org is no more. For various good reasons, the site managers decided to retire it after a run of about 15 years. Matthew Radey, who still owns the freejazz.org domain name, wishes to thank all the people who participated in the discussions, submitted links, left insightful comments, etc, over that long span. In particular, Phil Hargreaves and Dick Bowman deserve special mention for volunteering to help maintain the site for years with no compensation whatsoever.

freejazz.org started as an e-mail digest devoted to the discussion of free jazz and avant garde music in general. Click here to see the old Free Jazz Discussion as it was in 2000. Click on these dates to see freejazz.org at other times:

The image at the top of this page is the site as it appeared in 2012 right before it was retired. No doubt archive.org has more to offer. There should be archived versions of the original Free Jazz Discussion extending at least as far back as 1997, so hopefully we’ll be able to dig those up at some point.
